Tonight's Pitching Probables 8/16/10

vs. Pawtucket Red Sox (Fabio Castro 5-7, 4.74) @ 7:05pm

Game of the Day - Buffalo @ PawSox - After much deliberation, we're going out on a limb here and picking the Bisons versus the PawSox as the GotD. Sure, none of the other local squads are in action, but that just allows us to focus all of our attention on Pawtucket. The PawSox are 6-7 in the month of August and can improve to .500 with their third straight win tonight. They can also get to .500 against Buffalo on the season as the Bisons currently lead the season series 5 games to 4. Fabio Castro will be tasked with taming the Bisons bats tonight. In his last four appearances (2 starts & 2 out of the pen) Castro has allowed only 2 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings of work. Buffalo throws Fernando Nieve at the PawSox. Nieve makes his 4th start after being DFA'd by the New York Mets back on July 23rd. Despite allowing 4 runs, 8 hits and 2 walks against Scranton Wilkes-Barre in his last start, he did pick up his only win on the year. Dustin Pedroia is moving back up to the big club and Carlos Delgado seems to have a strained back that will keep him out of lineup, so the PawSox will have to rely on the old regulars at the plate. FYI, the PawSox are 2-0 with Pedroia and 51-68 without him...you do the math!

It's the last game before the two day All Star break in the New York-Penn League and it's a perfect day for baseball. We'll be running our Twitter contest a little later, so stay tuned for that and of course the usual live updates right here at Beyond Fenway and on Twitter @TheC40.

Lowell State of Mind

Get ready to be Lowellized* over these next couple of days! Beyond Fenway is making our first trip up to LeLacheur Park tomorrow, so be sure to keep an eye out for some live blog posts and up-to-the-minute tweets about the day's action. Also, I'm going to run a little experiment to see who is paying attention (if anyone truly is). We will have our first ever prize giveaway at the game tomorrow! So if you are attending, all you have to do is tweet from your seat and you could win. The first person to send a Twitter post to @TheC40, with their seat location, will win an undetermined prize from the Spinners gift shop. How easy is that? Now let's see if we can execute it...there will be plenty of reminders.

Now on to some more pressing issues, specifically those involving MiLB.com's Minors Moniker Madness. The tournament has reached the Finals and now only two men with crazy denominations stand on the brink of history. In what can be called a prodigious matchup, Lowell Spinners outfielder Seth "The Hammer" Schwindenhammer faces off against NW Arkansas Naturals pitcher Rowdy Hardy. The Hammer is trying to pull off one of the greatest upsets in a seeded bracket tournament of any kind. He was the 15th seed out of the Natty Nattress Bracket and the whole Spinners organization is poised to push him to victory...they also do a great job of setting the stage:

"What started as an improbable journey now has the potential to be a reality as a small-town Illinois farm-boy now stands on the precipice of greatness.

An underdog story as a 15-seed with a 15-letter last name, Lowell Spinners outfielder Seth Schwindenhammer meets Royals pitching prospect Leonard Franklin Hardy for the title in the fourth annual "Minors Moniker Madness" at MiLB.com for the best name in Minor League Baseball."

So vote early and vote often because the tournament ends Tuesday night, August 17th at 11:59pm. You can also win great prizes simply by placing your vote for "The Hammer".

400 - "Tonight, we dine in Lowell!" - This past Tuesday, August 10th, the Lowell Spinners played host to their 400th consecutive sellout at LeLacheur Park. As the team celebrated the life of the park's namesake, the fans continued their amazing support for the organization. The streak dates back to August 2, 1999. Team Vice President and General Manager Tim Bawmann said, "We pride ourselves on treating every game at LeLacheur Park as if it were Opening Day and we will continue to do so for what we hope is another 400 consecutive sell-outs."

Beyond Fenway is certainly looking forward to being at LeLacheur for the 405th consecutive sellout on Sunday!

*Lowellized is not a real word and although we may have just made it up, we definitely do not approve of its use under any circumstance.

Game of the Day - Fisher Cats @ Altoona - It's a battle of teams with identical 68-50 records on the season. Altoona sits on top of the Western division with their record, while the Fisher Cats are in second place in the Eastern Divsion. Both teams have to be feeling pretty secure and confident that they will make the playoffs, so maybe we have a finals preview on our hands here. Of course we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but it is always nice to have two teams, playing at such a high level, going head-to-head. Altoona took 2 of 3 in New Hampshire back in June and they took down the Fisher Cats again last night to start this series. The Cats are hopeful that they can sweep the rest of the weekend from the Curve and in doing so, provide themselves with the knowledge that they can go out and beat this team should they meet again in the postseason. The Curve have Justin Wilson on hill who is trying to improve on his 9-6 record. Wilson has allowed 3 or more runs in 5 of his last 6 starts. The Fisher Cats counter with Scott Richmond, who is making his first AA start on the season after going 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 5 games with Single-A Dunedin. He will know the lay of the land as he pitched for New Hampshire back in 2008 when he started 16 games for the Cats and compiled a 5-8 record. Richmond has plenty of MLB experience as well, making the bigs in '08 when he appeared in 5 games and in '09 when he made 27 appearances. The Fisher Cats are hoping he brings his big league stuff tonight.

Game of the Day - Mahoning Valley @ Spinners - For the second straight day we are taking Lowell in the GotD. Today is because of my new found love of all things Miguel Celestino! The recent New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week is hitting the mound tonight looking for his third straight victory. He has allowed only 5 earned runs in 25 innings of work with the Spinners this season and he has only allowed 1 earned over his last two starts. Celestino has also gone 5+ innings in 4 of his 5 starts for Lowell. On the other side of the diamond, Michael Goodnight is looking for a great night in his professional debut. The 2010 13th round pick of Cleveland signed a contract on Sunday and will be thrown to the wolves tonight. According to Baseball America, the former University of Houston hurler "has a fastball that reaches 94 mph and a plus slider." The Spinners are hoping that Celestino's experience far outweighs Goodnight's shine.

Farming New England (8/13/10)

The month of August has been not been a pretty one around the region. Our local nines have a little more than half a month to turn things around. Some are playing for a playoff spot, some are simply playing for pride, but as of right now I'm not sure any of them are showing it. Let's take a look around the region.

PawSox fans are in line to root for another Boston Red Sox player on their rehab back to the majors. The Laser Show is set to hit McCoy Stadium this weekend when Dustin Pedroia returns from a broken bone in his foot. Peedy is expected to be in the lineup on Saturday and Sunday with the PawSox and should return to Boston next Tuesday. Pawtucket could certainly use the help as they have lost 5 of their last 6 games, including Wednesday night's 5-1 loss to Lehigh Valley, a team that had dropped 14 of their last 15 games. Josh Reddick remains a bright spot in the Sox lineup. He is hitting .340 for the month of August, continuing his trend upwards after a .210 average in April and a dismal .181 in May. The PawSox return to McCoy on Friday night when they start a six game homestand in which they will play host to Buffalo and Lehigh Valley for three apiece.

They're already eliminated from contention for anything this season, they've lost their best player for the year after he was hit in the face with a pitch and now the New Britain Rock Cats best pitcher is moving up to AAA Rochester. Kyle Gibson got the call after 16 solid starts for New Britain where he posted a 7-5 record (more than 33% of the Rock Cats wins all season), with a 3.68 ERA and 77 strikeouts. Gibson, the Minnesota Twins #1 pick in 2009, is scheduled to make his AAA debut Friday night. The Rock Cats have dropped their 6 of their last 7 games. First baseman Eric Lis made his return to AAA after playing 76 games with New Britain. Outfielder Evan Bigley joined the Rock Cats this week after being called up from Single A Fort Myers and all he did to make his mark was go 5 for 9 in his first two games with a home run and 2 RBI. New Britain finishes up their six game road swing with three in Akron starting Friday night.

When Adeiny Hechavarria drove in Darin Mastroianni with a single in the first inning of a game against Bowie on Sunday night, he helped put his teammate into the franchise record books. Mastroianni scored his 86th run of the year on the play, making him the New Hampshire Fisher Cats all time runs leader for a single season. Catcher Brian Jeroloman (.429) and Mastroianni (.409) are 1-2 in the Eastern League in on-base percentage. Shawn Bowman and Eric Thames are tied for third in the league with 21 home runs each. The Fisher Cats are 4-5 in the month of August and now sit 1 1/2 games back of Trenton in the Eastern Division. New Hampshire is 10 1/2 games up on third place Reading, putting them in a decent position for a playoff spot. New Hampshire hits Altoona for three starting Friday night.

The Portland Sea Dogs have not been able to rely on any consistent pitching all season long and the stats don't lie. They have a team ERA of 4.77, good enough for third highest in the Eastern League and they are one of only two teams without a complete game all season. They have allowed the second most hits (1075) in the league, the second most home runs (105) and they have the second highest WHIP (1.47). On the bright side, catcher Luis Exposito continues his hot hitting ways and now has 30 doubles on the season which is good enough to be tied for eighth in the Eastern League and is only 10 off of the all-time team mark for a season. The Sea Dogs are 5-5 in the month of August and they've won 4 of their last 5 games, including a three game sweep of Bowie. Portland has three games in Richmond against the Flying Squirrels starting Friday night.

The Connecticut Tigers spent all of one day in sole possession of first place last week, then they decided they weren't comfortable there so they proceeded to drop 4 out of 5 to ensure their second place status. They do sit only 1 game back of Vermont still, so they remain within a good night of being back on top. Connecticut is a bit further back in a heated Wild Card race where they site in fourth place, 4 games back of Williamsport. All Star catcher Julio Rodriguez has collected 7 hits over his last four games. As a team, the Tigers have only 19 home runs on the season, second least in the New York-Penn League. Connecticut comes home for three games before the two day All Star break next week. They will host Auburn starting Friday night.

The Lowell Spinners are the hottest team on the block as far we we're concerned in New England. They've won 5 games in the month of August so far after only winning 6 in all of July. Four of their six loses this month have been one-run games. Lowell shortstop Felix Sanchez is tied for first in the New York-Penn League with 25 stolen bases. Starting pitcher Madison Younginer had his best start of the year on Tuesday against State College in which he went 6 scoreless innings allowing only 3 hits and no walks. The Spinners just won their first three game series of the season, taking 2 of 3 versus State College in the only matchup of these two teams all year. The Spinners host Mahoning Valley for three games this weekend, then they hit the All Star break on Monday.

The Vermont Lake Monsters are back in first place after spending August 5th in second place; the only day all season when they weren't in first. But they're not putting up much of a fight for the position. In the month of August they are 4-7. Reliever Neil Holland earned a spot on the All Star squad thanks to his 2-0 record and 1.16 ERA, he has also struck out 26 batters in 22 1/3 innings. DH/catcher David Freitas has had a slow start to his month after hitting .396 in the month of July. Freitas is only hitting .220 in August. For the first time in three weeks the Vermont team ERA dropped, from 4.15 last week down to 4.11. The Lake Monsters head to Jamestown for three games before the break.
