Game of the DayRed Wings vs. Red Sox – In the last four series in which the Rochester Red Wings have played four games against an opponent, they have managed a series split, but after last night’s loss to the PawSox they are going to need to take the next two games in order to at least salvage that much from their trip to McCoy. Four straight losses, plus an 11-18 June, have helped the Wings crash into the worst record in the league (30-47), 15 games back of Lehigh Valley in the North Division. For the second straight season Kyle Gibson has been hemmed up on a bad team, making his stats more inflated than they might regularly be. This is Gibson’s first start in New England since last season when he took up residence with the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats…his next New England start could very well be at Fenway Park. Gibson’s 83 strikeouts ranks fourth in the International League. Pawtucket on the other hand have run off 3 straight and are in the midst of their best month of the season with a 16-11 June record. They are firmly planted for a second half playoff push and their 42-36 record is good enough for second place in the North, 3 ½ back of Lehigh Valley. Matt Fox hits the hill for the home squad tonight in his 11th start of the season. Fox has gone without a decision over his last seven appearances (4 starts, 3 relief stints) and he has pitched no more than four innings in his last two starts. Last Saturday against Indianapolis Fox allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks in four innings. The PawSox will be looking to bookend the month of June with four game-win streaks while the Red Wings will simply be looking to halt a four game losing streak tonight. The four game series concludes on Friday night at 6:15pm.
