Fox, Collins and Sanz nab PotWs

For the second time this season three local players took home Player of the Week honors during the same period. Pawtucket's Matt Fox took the International League Pitcher of the Week honor and Connecticut's Tyler Collins and Luis Angel Sanz collected the New York-Penn League's Batter and Pitcher honors respectively for the period of August 8th through the 14th.

Matt Fox had hands down one of the best pitching weeks of the season. In two starts for the period, both on the road, he proceeded to lock down hitters from both Charlotte and Gwinnett in key games that helped put and keep the PawSox in first place. On the season, Fox has appeared in 21 games (19 starts) and has 113 strikeouts over 119 2/3 innings pitched. His 8 wins is tied with four others for most wins on the Pawtucket staff. Here are the numbers that earned him the I.L. Pitcher of the Week honor:
2 W, 15 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 15 Ks

Tyler Collins is in his first professional season out of Howard Junior College in Texas and had previously played three games with the Gulf Coast Tigers this year. He is batting .341 in 22 games with Connecticut and has 11 extra base hits, 18 runs scored and 4 stolen bases on 4 attempts. Collins helped the Tigers go 5-1 during last week, including three multiple hit games. Here are his numbers for the period of August 8 - 14th:
409 BA, 4 2B, HR, 8 R, 8 RBI, 2 SB

Luis Angel Sanz is in his second tour of duty with Connecticut after starting three games with the CTTigers in 2010. In ten starts this year Sanz has pitched at least 5 innings in all but one. His 57 strikeouts are second most in the NYPL and his 1.12 WHIP is fifth best. Sanz had only one start during this period, but it was exceptional as he dominated Lowell last Monday. Here is his line from that game and for the week:
W, 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K

Congratulations to Matt, Tyler and Luis for picking up the well deserved honors. At this point in the season the Vermont Lake Monsters are the only New England based MiLB team without a Player of the Week, but with three full weeks to go, look for that to change. All other teams have picked up at least two honors thus far.
