Game of the DayValleyCats vs. Tigers – It’s an all-out feline frenzy in Norwich, Connecticut tonight as the Tigers open up Dodd Stadium for the season against the defending NYPL Champion Tri-City ValleyCats. Connecticut finished a half game behind Tri-City last season in the Stedler Division thanks to two losses to close their season. Tigers outfielder Samir Rijo has come out of the gate swinging, racking up three doubles and five RBI in the team’s first three games. The Tigers have also been unafraid to go stealing, swiping five bases on seven attempts, with both Javier Azcona and Chad Wright picking up two steals apiece. Lanky lefty Matt Crouse will get his first start of the season for Connecticut after being selected in the 24th round of this year’s draft by the Tigers. Crouse posted a 5-1 record with a 3.74 ERA in his junior season at Ole Miss before joining the pro ranks. Kyle Hallock, a tenth round selection by the Houston Astros in this year’s draft, gets his first taste of professional baseball tonight as Tri-City’s starting pitcher. Hallock, a lefty out of Kent State, was named the MAC Pitcher of the Year this past season after posting a 10-4 record. The Tigers took two of three over the weekend in Lowell to start their season, while the ValleyCats were only able to muster one win in three games against Vermont in their home opening series. The sun is shining and the weather should be right around a perfect 75 degrees for the first pitch of this three game cat fight.
