Game of the DayPawSox vs. Red Wings – Happy 4th of July to all, Happy Birthday America and a special Happy Birthday to my brother Jim who hits the big 4-0 today...You are a grand OLD flag brother! Now on to America's Game...The PawSox halted a three game losing streak to start July and rebounded nicely on Sunday with a 14 hit effort, after only mustering two hits in a double header on Saturday versus the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Kyle Weiland must be licking his chops to get another shot at the Red Wings following his last outing, which may have been the best of his career. Last Wednesday versus Rochester he was nearly unhittable, allowing only 1 hit over 8 innings while striking out 12 Red Wing batters. Weiland’s 93 strikouts are second most in the International League and he is seventh in the league with a 3.02 ERA. Rochester starter Eric Hacker was Weiland’s counterpart last Wednesday, but did not fare as well…although he wasn’t too shabby. In 5 2/3 innings he allowed only 2 earned runs on 8 hits, but it was all the PawSox would need and then some thanks to Weiland’s gem. Although he can certainly be considered an All-Star snub by the I.L., it should be expected that he will be the first player to get a phone call if anyone were to bow out of the July 13th affair. The PawSox swept a three game series from Rochester at the end of June and they are 6-2 against the Wings this year with seven games to be played in the season series.
